Mangelnde Hygiene oder schlechte Qualität der Lebensmittel? Lebensmittelvergiftungen sind ein Problem an indischen Schulen. Im Osten des Landes sind nun mehr als 20 Kinder gestorben. In ihrem Essen haben Kriminalexperten Insektengift gefunden.

Nach dem Verzehr von giftigem Essen in einer Schule im Osten Indiens ist die Zahl der toten Kinder auf mindestens 21 gestiegen. Kriminalexperten haben nach offiziellen Angaben Spuren von Insektengift in den Zutaten gefunden. Neun Schüler starben bereits am Dienstag, zwölf weitere in der Nacht zum Mittwoch.

Mehrere Kinder zwischen acht und zwölf Jahren liegen noch im Krankenhaus, nachdem sie am Vortag in ihrer Schule im Bundesstaat Bihar giftiges Mittagessen erhalten hatten. Einige von ihnen seien in einem kritischen Zustand, hieß es.

In vielen indischen Bundesstaaten erhalten Kinder aus armen Familien an staatlichen Schulen kostenlos Essen. Wegen schlechter Hygiene oder schlechter Lebensmittelqualität kommt es jedoch immer wieder zu Vergiftungen. In diesem Fall traf es eine staatliche Schule in dem Dorf Masrakh im Distrikt Saran. Die Kinder übergaben sich nach dem Verzehr von Reis und Lin sen.

Der Regierungschef von Bihar, Nitish Kumar, hatte die Untersuchung des Vorfalls angeordnet. Er kündigte an, die Familien der toten Kinder sollten Entschädigungen erhalten. Trotz des Versprechens protestieren derzeit mehrere Hundert Menschen gegen die Regierung. Sie fordern harte Strafen für die Verantwortlichen.
